The lawsuit brought by the parents of a Lewis County race car driver against former NASCAR star Tony Stewart officially ended Thursday with a settlement agreement.

The terms of the agreement between the parents of Kevin Ward Jr. and Stewart were not disclosed, and the settlement papers were sealed.

Stewart appeared at Thursday's hearing in federal court in Utica to finalize the agreement after the judge denied a last minute effort by his lawyers to allow Stewart to skip the proceeding. He didn't speak with reporters.

Ward, from Port Leyden, was killed during a race at Canandaigua Motorsports Park in August 2014.

Ward climbed from his car after it spun while racing alongside Stewart.

As he walked out onto the track, Ward was struck and killed by Stewart's car.

Stewart was cleared of criminal wrong-doing.
