Why Cynthia Nixon Wants To Be Governor

Cynthia Nixon wants to be New York's next governor.

"Because I love this state," she said.

And her opening pitch? Well, Wednesday Nixon posted a video on her Twitter page in support of legalizing marijuana.

"There are a lot of good reasons for legalizing marijuana," she said.

She says legalizing pot would bring in hundreds of thousands of dollars in tax revenue and create jobs in agriculture.

Nixon is probably best known for her role as one of the stars in the TV show "Sex and the City" from the early 2000s, and has also won an Emmy, a Tony, and a Grammy award.

She announced her campaign in mid-March, running left of 2-term Governor Andrew Cuomo.

"This is the state where I've been a vocal advocate for LGBTQ equality and for women's health and women's rights, including a woman's right to choose," she said.

Part of Nixon's strategy to upset Cuomo in the gubernatorial race is tapping into the Black and Latino voter base, which Cuomo has historically received strong support from.

Recently, Nixon has spoken out on the deficits that she says schools with large minority populations face, which predominantly white schools do not.

Nixon says legalizing pot would also address racial inequalities in the prison system.

"We have to stop putting people of color in jail for something that white people do with impunity," she said.

New York's Democratic Primary is in September.
