The Tony nominations were announced this morning, and seven current productions received at least ten nominations.
Two original musicals each received twelve nominations: SongeBob SquarePants: The Musical and Mean Girls both adapted from other mediums; television and film. One of the 12 nominations for Mean Girls is for Tina Fey who was nominated for the book of the musical based on her screenplay. With eleven nominations, the revival of Tony Kushner’s epic, Angels in America becomes the most nominated play of all time. The revival of Carousel also racked up eleven nominations. Original musical and critic favorite, The Band’s Visit also received eleven nominations. The play Harry and the Cursed Child, Parts One and Two received ten nominations and the revival of My Fair Lady also received ten nominations.
