Saturday: Fire Destroys St. Lawrence County HomePosted: Updated:
Five volunteer fire departments battled a fire early Saturday morning which destroyed a home on the Pyrites - Russell Road, Town of Russell.
No one was hurt, but the home at 193 Pyrites - Russell was a total loss.
“We ran out the front door. We come around the front door. The front door is right here,”
When the first firefighters arrived on scene, flames could be seen around the roof, 7 News reporter Keith Benman reports. The fire was reported just after 2 AM.
The owner, Donald Powers, his wife and their daughter escaped the fire, but three cats, three lizards and a turtle perished in the blaze.
“We ran out the front door. We come around the front door. The front door is right here,” Powers said.
Powers thinks a cat pushing a towel on a wood stove might have started it.
“I woke up and screamed. Told my wife call the fire department. I grabbed the hose and tried to get it out. It was too much. It was moving too fast,” Powers said.
Firefighters from Russell, Pyrites, Hermon, Canton and Pierrepont were all on scene.
The Red Cross was on its way overnight to provide assistance. The home was not insured.
