Harrisville Residents Vote to Dissolve Village

Harrisville Residents Vote to Dissolve Village

Posted: Updated:

Harrisville residents have spoken and they've decided to dissolve the village of Harrisville into the town of Diana.

The final vote was 112 to 70. Voting closed at 9 p.m. Tuesday night.

The village will dissolve at the end of the year.

According to a year-long study conducted by the Development Authority of the North Country (DANC), dissolving the village could result in a 57 percent decrease in municipal taxes for village residents.

That was a big reason many people voted "yes."

"I'm looking forward to lower taxes," Karley Wake said, "and everything I've read, it doesn't seem like a bad decision to dissolve."

Those who voted "no" say there wasn't enough information on what would happen to village services. Some people don't believe taxes will decrease like the DANC study indicated.

"They say our taxes are going to go down, but for how long," said Becky Gibson, who voted against dissolving. "I feel that if it looks too good to be true, it probably is."

Village Mayor Gary Williams, who opposes dissolving the village, had no comment Tuesday night.
