New Bassmaster Contract Could Be Big Catch for Waddington

Posted: Updated:

Waddington could make history again with its Bassmaster Elite tournament. It's considering a four-year deal to bring it back year after year. Bassmaster confirms that's a bigger deal than they have with any community.

“Anglers feel welcomed here. We love it here," Waddington Mayor Janet Otto-Cassada said. "Thank god we've worked with the committee to make it a renowned area to come for fishing.”

Waddington already has the record for attendance. This year, it will also host a tournament just one year after the previous one - that's a rarity on the Bassmaster Elite circuit.

“I personally believe it's amazing. Because I think, you know, tourism is the direction the North Country has to go in,” said Robert Giordano, Waddington Bassmater event coordinator.

This year Massena, Louisville, Lisbon and Saint Lawrence County have joined Waddington to sponsor the event. The mayor said sales tax collected on the $3 million in sales generated by the tournament are distributed county wide.

The launching of the boats from the docks has all the pageantry of a NASCAR race. And at the weigh-in at the end of the day, everyone in the crowd is pulling for their own favorite bass fisherman.

It's up to the Waddington Village Board to accept or reject the four-year deal offered by Bassmaster. They will consider it at their July meeting.

No matter what that decision is, it's game on for this year's tournament.
