Man Charged In Death Of Lacey YekelPosted: Updated:
A man has been charged in the death of a Massena woman whose body was found nearly four years ago.
St. Lawrence County District Attorney Gary Pasqua announced early Thursday afternoon that 46 year old Christopher Hebert of Massena had been indicted on a charge of second-degree murder in the death of 25 year old Lacey Yekel.
State police say Hebert is also known as "Slug."
"There's been a lot of work done in the last four years gathering different information. It's just one of those things that took awhile to put together and now we're seeing the fruits of that,” said Pasqua.
Yekel's decomposed and partially wrapped body was found August 29, 2014 in a wooded area off Commerce Drive in the Massena Industrial Park.
Her body was positively identified in October 2014 using DNA and dental records.
She is believed to have been killed that June, when family members had last seen her. She wasn't reported missing until after the body was found.
State police had asked for the public's help solving Yekel's death on the second anniversary of the date her body was found. It has long been rumored around Massena that Hebert was her killer.
“Miss Yekel was one of those individuals who was a victim of obviously a terrible crime and we are glad that we are able to seek justice for her through this process,” said Pasqua.
Hebert was sent to St. Lawrence County jail following his arraignment in county court. He's being held without bail.
Hebert has had a long criminal career. He had at least three stints in state prison.
