Splashing in the water and playing in the dirt, it's hard to believe that nearly three months ago this turtle, named Turtle Wurtle, was involved in a house fire.

The Powers family of Russell lost everything that night in May, including three cats and three lizards. The family thought they lost their beloved turtle as well.

She was found safe, but covered in ashes in the gutted dining room of the home. The family was overcome with joy.

"I have no way of expressing it. It was just beyond everything," said Donald J. Powers, Turtle Wurtle's owner.

But the family wanted to make sure the turtle was okay. She was rushed to an exotic pet veterinarian in Albany for emergency care. She was treated for a post-fire infection and minor burns. After spending her recovery with Powers' sister in the Albany area, Turtle Wurtle returned home to the north country this weekend.

"I got my girl back, that's all. That's the best," said Donald J. Powers.

Although the Powers family was devastated when their home when up in flames, they've spent the last few months rebuilding a brand new home.

"I built the first one by myself and I said I'm going to do it again," said Donald L. Powers, Donald J.'s father and owner of the home.

The senior Powers says he would like to be back in the home by Thanksgiving with his family and beloved turtle by his side.
