The 28th annual Athena Award was presented to Barbara Webber at a dinner at the Hilton Garden Inn in Watertown Thursday night.

The Athena Award is given out each year by the Greater Watertown-North Country Chamber of Commerce to honor a community member for professional excellence, community service, and for actively assisting women in realizing their full leadership potential.

Webber was an educator in the Carthage Central School District for more than 30 years. She is on boards of several community organizations and was the first African American woman on the Jefferson County Board of Legislators.

"I am so surprised and honored and I appreciate everything so much," she said, "and all of the people here was a big surprise."

7 News was a sponsor of the award. Anchor Makenzie Piatt was master of ceremonies.
