Ogdensburg Becomes "ZBurg" in New Web Series

Posted: Updated:

It's Ogdensburg as you've never seen it. Through the eyes of assorted gangsters, a 12-year-old and a detective who just won't quit.

It's Zburg, a Vimeo On Demand Web series.

“I think people realize, 'Oh, this is a fun, offbeat comedic drama. And it's really to be enjoyed, said Mark Valley, Zburg writer and director.

Valley also plays the role of Detective Harry Mallette. You might have seen him in Boston Legal. Now the actor and Ogdensburg native has produced a crime drama set in his hometown.

“A lot of television shows are about these big urban centers. Why not do something specific?" said Valley. "Well there's a place I know well, specifically.”

And so did the actors. Valley was the one pro. All the others were local folks pitching in. That included family, friends and some spotted by a local tattoo artist.

Basically we had all new actors working on this. Like I said, 'We tried to find the real people,'" said Valley.

This wasn't just an effort to produce the next blockbuster series. This was an effort at community building. And much of that started at the Boys & Girls Club.

Some scenes were shot there. In those scenes, people from Ogdensburg will recognize long-time Boys & Girls director Tom Luckie. Club members were in on the act as well.

“It's great for our kids to see, you know, what you can accomplish with hard work and a game plan," said Luckie.

Valley is using the web series to teach storytelling at the Boys & Girls Club. And bringing a touch of Hollywood to his hometown.
