COO Departs Fowler Zinc Mine

It's "business as usual" at Empire State Mines in Fowler following the departure of the company's chief operating officer.

Keith Boyle's last day as COO of Titan Mining Corporation, which owns the mine, was September 5.

Titan spokesperson Jacqueline Allison wouldn't say why Boyle left, but said it wasn't related to an accident in July that injured nine miners or to any safety concerns.

General manager Joel Rheault, who was hired in July, will assume Boyle's duties.

Allison said the company's outlook is positive for the long term and the mine continues to operate normally.

She said the mine is actively hiring for a number of positions.

The nine miners were injured when an elevator came to what mine officials described as an “abrupt stop.”

Their injuries ranged from sprains to possible fractures. All nine were released from the hospital the same day, with seven immediately cleared for work.

About 140 of the mine's roughly 200 employees were idled while the elevator problem was fixed.
