After facing off with 15 competitors from 8 different Army installations, 25 year old Staff Sgt. Ifegwu Sampson Ifegwu won the best warrior competition to become the non-commissioned officer of the year.
The competition took place at Fort Bragg in North Carolina from August 17-24 and included a number of physical and mental tests, including a 12 mile run with a 55 pound ruck sack.
"It doesn't matter where you come from. It doesn't matter how small of a unit that you are deriving from. You can do it with a lot of hard work and a lot of brute force," said Ifegwu .
The next phase of the competition will be from September 29 through October 5 in Washington, D.C.
