Autopsy: Mine Worker Died From Broken Neck

The worker who was killed Tuesday in an explosion at Empire State Mines in the town of Fowler died from a broken neck.

That's according to St. Lawrence County Coroner Joseph White.

He said 40 year old Brendan DeMasters of North Royalton, Ohio died from a fracture of the cervical vertebrae. He ruled the death as an accident. 

DeMasters worked for Major Drilling, a contractor at Empire State Mines.

A source told 7 News drilling and blasting were going on at the time of the accident. DeMasters was using an air tool to clean out the hole when something on the equipment exploded.

DeMasters died at Gouverneur Hospital Tuesday, about 90 minutes after the 11 a.m. accident.

An investigation into the accident is underway. Meanwhile, production at the mine has partially resumed and officials say they hope to return to full production as soon as possible.
