Soldiers & Families Enjoy Pre-Deployment Drive-In FunPosted: Updated:
The Black River Drive-In made way for military families Thursday night.
"It's two-fold," drive-in owner Loren Knapp said. "One, I like doing it for the soldiers, I get a lot of military people here, and I couldn't ask for a better bunch of people to be customers."
It was a pre-deployment family readiness meeting and movie for family members of the 2nd Brigade, 2-87 Infantry Battalion.
Before watching "Incredibles 2," Knapp was recognized by the soldiers who organized the event with a certificate of appreciation. Then it was off to the concession stand.
Two thousand soldiers from the 2nd Brigade will be deploying to Afghanistan from late October through the end of November.
Thursday night was just a bit of family fun before deployment.
"If you don't take time to actually take care of families, and make sure that soldiers have an opportunity to have some downtime," Headquarters and Headquarters Company commander Nathan Bennett said, "then you are missing the biggest part of what makes the Army successful."
"We actually just got married a couple months ago," Spec. Mackenzie Beeman said.
She and her husband are both in the military. They met at Fort Drum and are now expecting their first child. They will be one of the many families separated in the upcoming deployment.
"It has been very fast," Beeman said, "and it's been very nerve wracking, too, I would say."
The night was all about family readiness, just one of the many ways the Army serves the soldiers who serve the nation.
