Canadian Company To Open Massena Plant, Hire Workers

A Canadian manufacturer will soon open a plant in Massena and employ 18 people.

A tower is being built by Specialty Yarns of Cornwall. It's where they'll manufacture heavy duty cords used in firefighting and by the military.

The company will also lease an existing building at the Massena Industrial Park from the St. Lawrence County Industrial Development Agency. The American subsidiary will be called AmTech Yarns.

“As you look to try to build the economy, whether it's local companies or attracting somebody from Canada, we're trying to diversify," said Patrick Kelly, the chief executive officer of the St. Lawrence County Industrial Development Agency.

“We acquired the building six or seven years ago with the purpose of redeveloping it and putting it back into private hands. And that's what's happening.”

The agency secured $950,000 in loans and lease financing for the project. The project represents a $3.7 million investment by Specialty Yarns. The facility is expected to open early next year.
