Italian Flag Raised In Watertown For Columbus Day

Posted: Updated:

In honor of Columbus Day, community members in the city of Watertown helped raise the Italian flag outside of city hall.

Members of the Italian American Civic Association of Watertown helped coordinate the service with Mayor Joe Butler.

The Knights of Columbus recited history about Columbus Day before the flag was raised.

Italian American Civic Association President Paul Alteri says this Columbus Day tradition has existed for as long as he can remember.

"This day's important to a lot of people, not just the Italians here in the city, with Watertown, it's important to the city itself because it's a long-standing tradition here to celebrate Columbus Day," he said.

Alteri says the holiday remains an important part of Italian-American heritage and will continue to be celebrated in Watertown.
