Watertown Man Allegedly Possessed Retired Deputy's Stolen Badge

Posted: Updated:

Sometimes even law enforcement officials are victims of crime.

Case in point - Peter Barnett, a retired Jefferson County sheriff’s deputy, had his badge and identification card stolen from his vehicle over the weekend, according to Watertown police.

The suspect in the case is identified as 19 year old Eric Widner of 502 Academy Street, Apartment 1, Watertown.

City police charged him early Sunday morning with petit larceny and fifth-degree criminal possession of stolen property.

Police said Widner broke into a parked car on Cross Street and stole 85 quarters from the vehicle.

Widner was also allegedly in possession of Barnett's badge and ID card. Police said those items had been stolen from a vehicle earlier that night.

Widener was issued a ticket and is due to appear in city court on October 24.
