Evacuation Drill Held For Carthage Students

Posted: Updated:

To prepare for an emergency, Carthage School District is putting plans into practice.

High school students went through an evacuation drill Friday afternoon, leaving school early and loading onto buses.

The head of transportation for Carthage says the state mandates that all schools have an early dismissal drill each year, but normally kids just leave 15 minutes early and it's basically a normal day.

This year the district wanted to do better.

"We've always had, in print, a backup plan to evacuate, bring the students to the bus garage and evacuate from there, but it's never been done. And again, without practice, the last day that you want to try it for the first time is under a true emergency situation," said John Gibbons, transportation director.

The district also plans to repeat this drill with middle school students and again with both the middle and high school during this school year.
