This week's fishing forecast...

St. Lawrence River

Smallmouth bass are active on crayfish at depths of 30 to 50 feet; bigger fish at 50 feet. Jig crayfish on a drop-shot rig using half-ounce tungsten weight. For lures, favorite is Berkley Twitching Minnows.

Northern pike hitting at 20 to 30 feet, edge of weed beds, on bigger shiners. For lure try deep-diving X-raps, huskie jerks, and reef runners in black, blue or purple, all with silver.

Black River

Salmon staging in trench outside Black River bay, readying for fall spawning run up Black River. Fish are being caught 100 feet down on spindoctors and flies in green, blue or glow chartreuse.

Oswegatchie River

Through Edwards, large population of smallmouth bass, walleye and big pike.

Trout Lake and Sylvia Lake

Great bass fishing with crayfish.

Black Lake

Crayfish bite is on for smallmouths. Fish shallow, using single snelled hook with just enough split-shot to get bait to the bottom. Frog bite on all summer; easiest and most effective lure has been horny toad.
