Junior Alex Benway (Queensbury, NY) and freshman Catherine Zarnofsky (Glenville, NY) led the way for the Clarkson University Cross Country team at the Middlebury Invitational on Saturday afternoon.
The Clarkson men placed third among nine teams with a score of 67 points, trailing only Middlebury (18) and Williams (64). Rounding out the team scores were St. Michael’s (123), Paul Smiths (138), Norwich (149), Potsdam (211), Johnson State (239) and Vermont Technical College (Incomplete). The Golden Knights’ women came in fourth among eight teams with 117 points, behind Middlebury (15), Williams (53), and St. Michael’s (87). Norwich (151), Potsdam (160), Johnson State (Incomplete) and Paul Smiths (Incomplete) also competed.
Benway led all performers for the Knights, finishing the 8,000-meter event in a time of 27 minutes, 13 seconds for a third-place overall finish. Sophomore Pat Carroll (Queensbury, NY) was 1:25 behind Benway, and finished in 12th place for Clarkson, closely followed by Neal Campbell (Queensbury, NY) in 13th. Finishing off the scoring for Clarkson were freshmen Dan Fritz (Cicero, NY) and Nick Marshall (Huntington, VT) in 17th and 22nd place, respectively.
On the women’s side, freshman Catherine Zarnofsky came in 17th place to lead all Clarkson runners with a time of 21:55.6. Junior Maureen Hill (Latham, NY) was 15 seconds behind Zarnofksy, and came in 19th place, while sophomore Rachel Bachman (Queensbury, NY) finished a minute later in 26th. Sophomore Jessica Hernandez (Owego, NY) and freshman Erin Corrigan (Remsen, NY) came in just behind Bachman in 27th and 28th place, respectively.
