Clarkson Falls to Union

April 9, 2011

By outscoring the Golden Knights 11-1 over a 30-minute span midway through Saturday night’s Liberty League contest, Union College pulled away for a 15-6 victory over the Clarkson University Women’s Lacrosse team under the lights at Hantz Turf Field.

Abby Stohler led a balanced Union attacked with three goals. Casey Dianni posted two goals and two assists for the Dutchwomen, who improved their record to 6-4 overall and to 4-1 in the Liberty League.

With the game tied 3-3 with 12:20 remaining in the first half, Union went on a seven-goal run to take a 10-3 lead with 24:06 left in the game. Clarkson junior Saryn Campbell (West Bolton, VT) scored her second goal of the game to put the Knights back on the scoreboard, making it 10-4 with 18:18 remaining. The Dutchwomen, however, answered back with four straight scores to go on top 14-4 with just under 10 minutes to play.

Campbell with her third of the game and sophomore Katie VanDeValk (Baldwinsville, NY) scored late in the contest to close out Clarkson’s scoring.

Campbell led the Green and Gold with three goals, Sophomores Alyssa Cristaldi (North Syracuse, NY) and VanDeValk tallied one goal and one assist apiece. Junior Laura Barlow (Latham, NY) also scored for the Knights.

Union outshot Clarkson 29-20, while the Knights controlled groundballs 13-11. Junior Hannah Walters (Amherst, NY) posted six saves for Clarkson while Alexis Deeb made 13 stops for the Dutchwomen.

Clarkson (1-7, 0-4) will look to snap a seven-game losing skid when it plays at archrival St. Lawrence in a 6:00 p.m. game on Tuesday.
