Northern Sur-whet Owl

Elusive Sur-whet Owl Spotted

The pictures were taken by Lisa Elliott while on a walk with her husband, Steve on their property near Lincoln Rd in Canton, NY on Sunday, Jan. 15th, 2012 after the ice/snow storm came through NNY. The owl had been in cover in lower bushes and then flew up to the tree seen in the pictures as the couple moved along a trail. This owl is primarily nocturnal. When observed during the daytime, Saw-whet Owls demonstrate unusual tameness and can often be approached without the bird flying away.
