At just about 11 o'clock today the Massena, New York, Labor Day Parade kicked off. As the parade headed towards Main Street via Center Street, people from all over town lined the streets. Children awaited the tradition of the tossing of the candy, adults by their side. It was a seasonable over cast day, and, luckily, the rain held off. It seemed everyone, watchers and parade participants alike were in good spirits. The flashing lights of a local police car, the wailing sirens of the fire trucks excited young and old alike. The Massena marching band was seen and heard, and everyone from Thomas The Tank, teacher unions, the VFW, government and non-government union members, Shrine Clubs of Massena and Cornwall, Nurse's Association and even Spiderman was seen heading down the street. As the parade passed by and came to an end the children scrambled to pick up whatever remaining candy could be found, held tightly to their balloons and other prizes and headed off to enjoy whatever the rest of their day held, for school officially begins in Massena, on Thursday, the 5th of September.
