Junior Mitch Collins (Baldwinsville, NY) scored a game-high four goals and freshman Matt McCabe (Syracuse, NY) posted six assists to pace the Golden Knights’ offense in the Clarkson University Lacrosse team’s 13-11 victory over Potsdam College at Hantz Turf Field on Tuesday afternoon.
Freshman Ryan Cole (Orchard Park, NY) was sharp in the Clarkson goal posting 11 saves, including eight stops in the second half, as the Green and Gold won their second straight game to improve their record to 2-8.
After falling behind 3-0 in the opening five minutes of the non-league contest, the Knights ran off seven straight goals en route to taking an 8-4 lead at the half. Collins started the Clarkson run with the Knights’ first three goals. Potsdam (4-5) opened the third quarter with three consecutive goals to cut the Clarkson lead to 8-7, but the Knights regrouped and closed out the stanza with three goals to hold an 11-7 advantage after 45 minutes.
Collins scored his fourth goal of the game, the eventual game-winner, to open the final quarter to give Clarkson a 12-7 lead. The Bears, however, rallied down the stretch, scoring four of the last five goals to make the game close.
Ben McCullough led Potsdam with three goals.
Sophomore Bryan Huff (Hillsborough, NJ) and freshman John Devine (Orchard Park, NY) both tallied three goals for the Knights, who won their third straight over the Bears, and ninth in the past 10 meetings against their cross-town rival.
Junior Tyler Long (Liverpool, NY) and sophomores Eric Gollands (Chelmsford, NY) and Matt Cyr (Cheshire, CT) rounded out Clarkson’s goal scorers with one each.
Potsdam held a 37-34 advantage in shots, but the Knights controlled ground balls 32-30. Along with scoring a goal, Billy Richards made six saves in 51 minutes of action for the Bears.
Senior defenseman Evan Renwick (Wappingers Falls, NY) scooped up a team-high six ground balls for the Green and Gold.
Clarkson returns to Liberty League play on Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. game at rival Rensselaer in Troy, NY.
