United Helpers Honors Staff

Ogdensburg – The Society of the United Helpers recently awarded the Margaret R. Spies Awards. The Margaret R. Spies Awards recognize exceptional members of the United Helpers direct care team. Certified Nurse Aides, Community Resident Aides, Home Health Aides and Personal Care Attendants are among those considered for recognition. This year’s recipients were: Denise E. Logan, United Helpers Care, Inc; Nancy L. Snyder, United Helpers Maplewood Campus; Deborah L. Aldrich, United Helpers Nursing Home; and Darlene M. Bender, United Helpers Adult Residence/Home Health Services.
In December of 2000, Ann Spies made a generous gift to the Society of the United Helpers, creating an endowment in memory of her mother, Margaret Spies, former resident of the United Helpers Nursing Home. Each year, one person is selected to receive the award from each of the United Helpers Nursing Homes, United Helpers Care, Inc. and the United Helpers Adult Home. Candidates are evaluated on several criteria, including: flexibility, attendance, willingness and ability to teach and mentor others, attitude, and a host of other qualities. To earn the Margret R. Spies Awards, candidates are nominated by their administrative team and their peers.
Logan, a Resident Counselor for United Helpers Care, Inc., is noted for her reliability, professional growth and dedication to those she serves. An employee since 1997, she is lauded for her enthusiasm and team spirit; going above and beyond the call of duty, often taking extra shifts and advocating for her residents. Logan has served the Project Team, an employee activity committee, for more than ten years, eight of which as Chairperson.
Snyder, a Certified Nurse Aide for the United Helpers (Maplewood) Canton campus since 2008, is recognized for her professional growth, dependability, positive attitude, and leadership abilities. Her peers cite her flexibility, “can do” spirit, fantastic attitude, and boundless energy in several nominations.
Aldrich, a Certified Nurse Aide for United Helpers Nursing Home since 2006, was noted for her, work ethic, patience, concern, mentoring of her coworkers, and her exceptional care and compassion toward residents. She was strongly recommended by her peers who cited her commitment to her residents and dedication to quality care.
Bender, Personal Care Attendant and employee since 2008 of the United Helpers Adult Residence, is noted for her dedication, team spirit and for always going above and beyond to serve her residents. She has received numerous compliments from coworkers and family members with regard to her compassion and genuine concern for others.
“This award is given in the spirit of my mother, Margaret Spies,” said Ann Spies. “My mother was an exceptional lady. In addition to being an exceptional wife and mother, she was a teacher in Hammond for many years and was dedicated to and involved with her community. She appreciated hard work and the ability to give from the heart. That is what these women all do each day. They have a special talent, a gift, and we are very fortunate to have them.”
United Helpers, Inc employs more than 390 Certified Nurse Aides, Community Resident Aides and Personal Care Attendants and provides free Certified Nurse Aide training courses to more than a hundred individuals each year.

“This award is special because the recipients come highly recommended by their peers,” commented Stephen E. Knight, CEO for United Helpers. “Our Direct Care team members are at the core of United Helpers. On behalf of the United Helpers organization and those we serve, I thank you.”
