CORTLAND, N.Y. (WWNY) - It was a battle between two former champions in the girls’ Section 10 Class D lacrosse final Tuesday.
Skaneateles was ranked number 4 and South Jefferson was ranked number 8. The Spartans were champs last year and the Lakers were trying to take back the title.
The game was a thriller throughout.
At the end of the second half, the Spartans' Natalie Strough ties it on the free position with less than 18 seconds left to make it 10-10.
But Skaneateles wins the draw and the Lakers' Olivia Navaroli scores with two seconds left on the clock.
Skaneateles wins 11-10.
Salmon River squeaked by Canton in the girls' Section 10 overall lacrosse championship
With 14 minutes to go in the game, Canton's Morgan Whitman passes to Hannah Stevenson, who goes over the top to score. The Golden Bears lead 8-6.
The Shamrocks' Paisley Cook passes to Wynter Jock, who picks the lower corner, cutting Canton's lead to 8-7.
With five minutes to go, Meg Martin crosses through the crease and scores point-blank for Salmon River, tying the game 8-8.
Jock passes to Jillian Benedict, who buries the game-winning goal with 35 seconds left.
Salmon River wins the championship 9-8.
Both teams advance into state sectional play. Both play in Vestal on Thursday.
