Saturday Sports: Watertown Rapids Baseball Season Begins

WATERTOWN, N.Y. (WWNY) - After a big road win Friday night against Adirondack in Boonville, the Watertown Rapids opened the home portion of their 2019 Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League season Saturday night against Mohawk Valley.

Mayor Joe Butler threw out the first ball as the Rapids open up another Collegiate League season. At the top of the first, visitors get on the board, Joseph Carpenter singles up the middle, Kyle Johnson comes around to score. Mohawk Valley on top 1-0. It would be all Mohawk Valley this game as they defeat the Rapids 11-1.

The Section 3 and Section 10 Softball Semifinals continued Saturday at a number of sites around the area with championships and berths to championship games on the line.

At Carrier Park in Syracuse, top seed Lafargeville met Fabius Pompey in the Section 3 Class D Softball Semifinals. At the top of the first, Lafargeville pitcher Sarah Johnson gets the strikeout to end the inning. At the bottom of the second, Lafargeville gets on the board as Marlee Gill singles to right field. Abby Gaumes comes around from 2nd to score, 1-0 Lafargeville. At the top of the fourth, Fabius Pompey ties it up. Alyssa Golden doubles to left field and Maddy Reidl scores, knotting the game at 1. Johnson would strike out 12 and allow 2 hits and Rachel Davis drove in the game winner in the bottom of the 7th as Lafargeville beats Fabius Pompey 2-1 to advance to the Class D Title game Monday night.

In Lowville, the Section 3 Class B Softball Semifinal as 2nd seed South Jeff met Adirondack. At the top of the first, Adirondack gets on the board as Hannah Miller gets off a Jillian Hare pitch and it's a home run for Miller, putting Adirondack on top 1-0. Bottom of the third, South Jeff ties it up as Alexys Gayne hits a sacrifice fly to center field. Hannah McNamara tags and scores from 3rd, tying the game at 1. At the top of the fifth, Adirondack regains the lead. Emma Hennessey hits a blast to right center and she's off to the races, a 3 run home run for Hennessey that puts Adirondack on top 4-1. At the bottom of the fifth, South Jeff gets one back as Emma Shafer singles up the middle and Alayna Bush scores. Score: 4-2. But South Jeff falls to Adirondack 4-3.

In the Section 10 Class D Softball championship, Edwards Knox met Hammond. Abby Hart belts an inside the park home run to put Edwards Knox up 2-0. Hammond answers as Kelsey Bennett goes for the gap for an inside the park home run of her own, tying the game at 2. At the top of the 7th it was Hart with a base hit back up the middle, plating a run. Score: 3-2 Cougars. Then it was Koryn Rowe with the RBI single, 4-2 Cougars. Edwards Knox defeats Hammond 6-2 for the Cougars first softball title since 2008.

In the Section 10 Class A Softball Championship, Malone met Massena. Massena’s Kristin Oliver singles up the middle, cutting the Malone lead to 3-2. Malone gets that one back on the bases loaded walk to Madison Klepfer. Then it was Brynn Nelson with a shot to deep left field that plates 2 more runs. Score: 6-2 Huskies. Jaylyn Cook counters with a RBI single for Massena, but Malone goes on to beat Massena 10-4 to win the Section 10 Class A Title.
