WATERTOWN, N.Y. (WWNY) - In Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League action from the Alex Duffy Fairgrounds Sunday afternoon, the Watertown Rapids hosted the Utica Blue Sox. The Rapids looking to bounce back from an 11-1 loss Friday night at the fairgrounds to the Mohawk Valley Diamond Dawgs.
At the top of the first, Rapids starter Greg Tobin getting some help from his defense as Evan Harold makes a nice diving grab in right. Then it was Tobin with a strikeout, keeping the Blue Sox off the board in the 1st. At the bottom of the first, the Rapids get on the board. Harold hits a shot off the 1st baseman's glove that goes for a base hit and George Rosales scores, putting the Rapids on top 1-0. At the top of the second,Tobin still cruising along getting a strikeout looking. Tobin went 6 innings allowing no runs on 3 hits, walking 2 and striking out 7. Rapids win 3-2 in 11 innings.
The Lisbon Golden Knights won the Section 10 Class D Baseball title on Friday, upsetting the Heuvelton Bulldogs 8-2. An improbable feat for a team that had no baseball program the past 2 seasons and features one senior, with the rest of the players 8th and 9th graders and sophomores. Coach Dave Gravlin says the hard work of the players and their dedication has paid big dividends, culminating in a sectional title.
The McVean Athletic Center on the campus of Jefferson Community College was host to the North Country Shootout this weekend. 11 area high school teams played Saturday and Sunday, getting in 4 games apiece. The tournament has been a fixture the first weekend in June at J.C.C. for nearly 20 years, with proceeds from the event going to the J.C.C. Women’s Basketball team for a variety of things like trips and basketball gear for the players. The tournament also a chance for women’s basketball coach, Josh Woodward to get a close-up look at the local talent.
