WATERTOWN, N.Y. (WWNY) - Former Jefferson County Legislator James St. Croix Sr. has died.

St. Croix was an eight-term representative for the county's 15th district, which is on Watertown's north side.

He died Wednesday at Samaritan Summit Village in Watertown. He was 85 years old.

St. Croix was one of the few Democrats serving on the board of legislators while he was in office.

Former Jefferson County Democratic party chair Sean Hennessy remembers the man he was.

"A consummate politician, a veteran, and a proud family man," Hennessy said. "Jim, to me, was just a great resource when it came to all things local. Before being a legislator, he was a mailman, so he was all about the community and touching bases at a local level with the community. He just brought a very level-headed approach to politics."

His calling hours will be at Cummings Funeral Service from 4 to 7 p.m. on Monday, June 10.

His funeral is Tuesday morning.
