HAMMOND, N.Y. (WWNY) -Funeral services for Josephine P. Toland, age 94, of Hammond, NY, will be held on Tuesday, June 11, 2019, at 2:00PM at the 1st Congressional Church with Rev. David Sheppard officiating. Burial will be in Chippewa Street Cemetery immediately following.
Calling hours will be held from 1:00PM up until the time of the service at the 1st Congregational Church. Mrs. Toland passed away on Friday, June 7, 2019, at Claxton Hepburn Medical Center surrounded by her loving family. Josephine is survived by her sons, James Elwin Toland of Hammond, NY and David Walter Toland of Hammond, NY; eight grandchildren, Steven, Kevin, Kimberly, Christopher, Peggy Toland, and Dennis and Gregory Hillier; seven great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. She is predeceased by a daughter, Sandra Ellen Crannell; a son, Mark Thomas Toland; a brother, Melvin Shoemaker; and two sisters, Doris Smithson and Ruth Tompson. Josephine was born on December 10, 1924, in Skagway, Alaska, the daughter of the Rev. William H. and Cynthia Irene Dayhuff Shoemaker.
She graduated from Saratoga Springs High School at the age of 16. Josephine married Henry E. Toland on June 26, 1942 at the Nazarene Church in Saratoga Springs, NY. He predeceased her on July 29, 2009. Josephine was a secretary for the family farm for many years. Josephine was a Sunday School teacher for many years, served as the treasurer for the Ogdensburg Wesleyan Church for over twenty four years, and was also a member of the Farmer’s Bureau.
