STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. (WWNY) - The second highest military honor has been bestowed upon a fallen Fort Drum soldier.

Staff Sergeant Michael Ollis was 24 years old when he gave his life shielding a Polish army lieutenant from a suicide bombed while deployed to Afghanistan in 2013.

Ollis’s father and sister accepted the Distinguished Service Cross at a VFW post named after the soldier on Staten Island.
