Sunday Sports: Watertown Rapids Baseball falls to Amsterdam

WATERTOWN, N.Y. (WWNY) - A Father’s Day Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League contest from the Alex Duffy Fairgrounds as the Watertown Rapids hosted the Amsterdam Mohawks. The rapids looking to extend their 2 game win streak and stay atop the PGCBL West Division.

At the bottom of the first, the Rapids get on the board as James Krick gets all of this pitch and golfs it over the wall in right field for a 2 run home run. Rapids on top 2-0.

As the top of the second, Rapids starter Sachin Nambiar doing it with his glove, snagging a Kevin Jiminez shot and throwing him out at first base and his arm getting Landon Jordan to go down swinging. Amsterdam starter Blake Dockery settled down, getting Dylan Sanchez swinging to end the second inning.

Amsterdam beats Watertown 7-3. The Rapids record falls to 7-4 on the season. They play Albany on Monday at 6:15 pm.

The weather cooperated for the Rapids Sunday, but getting games in so far this season has been a problem for the team. With 3 of their first 13 PGCBL games and Saturday night’s exhibition game getting rained out. Coaches don’t like seeing doubleheaders begin to stack up this early in the season, and rainouts force management to juggle an already tight schedule with promotions.

Phase one of a three phase expansion is well underway at Cheel Arena on the campus of Clarkson University.

This week, the school gave an inside look at the progress of the $3.4 million project which will see a new ice surface installed, along with state of the art training facilities, new locker rooms for the men’s and women’s hockey teams and a facelift to the outside of the 28 year old facility.

All 3 phases of the upgrade are expected to be complete in early 2020, and will allow Cheel Arena to be used as a site for the World University Games in 2023.
