CHIPPEWA BAY, N.Y. (WWNY) - Fire destroyed the home of a family of five in Chippewa Bay.
Smoke was billowing from the windows and roof of 1179 County Route 6 when firefighters arrived just after 7:30 p.m. Thursday. Several dogs were already out of the house and firefighters rescued two more.
An aerial truck had to be called in from Alexandria Bay. It took about two hours to get the fire under control. Firefighters said the fire was too intense to battle from inside the home.
Michelle Howard lived there with her husband and three children, ages 6 to 14. She was at home when the fire started and discovered it when she heard popping noises upstairs and went to look.
“She went, seen some smoke coming out of one of the bedrooms and opened it and it blew her right back and she fell down the stairs and got a little hurt," her brother-in-law, Andrew Howard, said. "She ended up having to go to the emergency room and get checked out.”
Andrew Howard it was a good thing the fire didn’t happen when the family was sleeping.
“Luckily, my brother and his wife and the kids weren’t in there in the middle of the night or something, because they had fire alarms -- they were all going off -- but it was just a bad fire. It got hot.”
An account has been set up at Citizens National Bank of Hammond, where donations can be left for the Howard family.
The cause is under investigation. The Red Cross is helping the family.
