WATERTOWN, N.Y. (WWNY) - The 202nd edition of the Jefferson County Fair is open. The longest continuously operating fair in the country offers plenty of rides, food and entertainment.
But the farm animals are at the heart of the fair.
The cows showed up Tuesday, but there is still a lot of work to do to get them ready for all the different competitions happening this week.
“We were up at 4 o’clock in the morning to wash the cows and set their top lines and poof their tails and, like, spray paint and stuff,” said Chascidy LaQuay, who’s showing cows.
LeQuay was just one of the kids helping to get her cows ready Tuesday. She was busy giving hair cuts.
Meanwhile, Emerson Ginger helped give his show cow a bath.
“Yeah, you just have to scrub her,” he said.
After hours of hard work to make sure these animals are looking their best, comes what Emerson says is the best part.
“The excitement of showing and never knowing who is going to win, me or somebody else,” he said.
But the cows are more than just show animals to the kids and adults involved.
“We love them; our cows are part of our family and that’s the way we treat them and we absolutely love them, they are kinda like our pets, except a mature cow weights 1,200 pounds,” said Lisa Porter, who’s showing cows.
After a long day of showing, LaQuay knows her favorite cow, Starlet, needs a rest.
“She will come down and lay down and I’ll just lay down beside her and she will end up taking her head and like wrap it around your stomach and she will fall asleep and I usually fall asleep too,” she said.
The midway opened Tuesday afternoon. The opening ceremonies officially happen at 6:30 p.m., followed by the fireman’s parade at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
