MASSENA, N.Y. (WWNY) - United Steelworkers members at Arconic in Massena are voting on a new three year contract. More than 3,000 other USW Arconic workers nationwide are doing the same.
Vote results should be known late Thursday night. Meetings to discuss the specifics of the contract are being held at the USW union hall in Massena.
Union leadership says the proposed contract preserves important benefits and includes a pay raise.
In May, union members authorized a strike if necessary. A tentative agreement was announced June 28.
“This is their livelihood. This is what they’re going to live off of. So that’s why it’s important. They’re going to speak their voice whether or not they like it today. And we’ll find out,” said Mark Goodfellow, USW Local 420-A president. “There were some modifications on both sides. Both sides came to realize that we had to make some moves to make some things happen. So that’s what ended up happening.”
The USW has not yet reached a contract deal with Alcoa. Those negotiations resume July 17.
