WATERTOWN, N.Y. (WWNY) - A crumbling building in the village of Antwerp is expected to be torn down soon.
Village Mayor Jonathan Cole says demolition of the building at 56 Main Street could begin this week. Parts of the building caved in back in June.
Afterwards, engineers said the building was in “imminent danger” and needed to come down.
The village will pay for the project up front but hopes to recoup some of the money.
“We’re still in talks with our lawyer right now to figure out what’s going to be the best route to recoup our losses. And hopefully we can get the county to step in and do some more code enforcements in the village with us to prevent this from happening again. Because while we can probably afford to do it once, we can’t have this becoming a regular occurrence,” said Cole.
The village wants to acquire the property and put ‘green space’ there.
