Watertown man indicted on rape, sex abuse and other charges

WATERTOWN, N.Y. (WWNY) - A Watertown man has been indicted on 15 criminal counts, including rape, sexual abuse and unlawful imprisonment.

A Jefferson County grand jury handed up the indictment against 34 year old Jonathan Melendez of 1708 Ohio Street, Apartment 31.

On May 20, Melendez is accused of breaking into a home in Watertown, hitting a woman in the face with a knife, forcing her to have sex and trying to choke her.

The grand jury indicted him on the following counts:

- first-degree burglary

- first-degree rape (2 counts)

- first-degree criminal sexual act (4 counts)

- first-degree sexual abuse

- third-degree criminal possession of a weapon

- attempted forcibe touching

- second-degree unlawful imprisonment

- criminal obstruction of breathing or blood constriction

- second-degree menacing

- second-degree harassment

- violating an order of protection

Melendez is being held in the county jail on $15,000 bail or $30,000 bond.
