Gouverneur & St. Lawrence County Fair gets head start with horse shown

GOUVERNEUR, N.Y. (WWNY) - The Gouverneur and St. Lawrence County Fair isn’t officially open, but the annual horse show was underway Monday.

About a dozen riders showcased their English riding horses in day one of the 4-H competition.

The riders are all from St. Lawrence County and range from 9 to 18 years old.

Judy Boyer of Lisbon has helped organize horse shows at the fair since the late 1960s.

She says it gives exposure to horseback riding all week long.

"Maybe some of the people watching will say, 'I should get my child involved in this, or my grandchild,'" she said. "They might come up to one of us and say, 'Where can I take lessons?' And there are several places in the county now where people can do that."

The fair officially opens at 4 p.m. Tuesday.

Country singer John Michael Montgomery takes the stage at 8 p.m.

7 News will bring you coverage from the fair throughout the week.
