CANTON, N.Y. (WWNY) - A father, who lost his son in a house fire because the boy was locked in an upstairs bedroom, takes a plea deal.
31-year-old, Michael Riley, pleaded guilty to 2nd degree criminal contempt, a misdemeanor.
He was indicted in April on a criminal contempt charge for, according to court documents, allowing someone to be under the influence of alcohol or drug’s in his child’s presence.
Riley’s 5-year-old son, Aiden Riley, died in a house fire in February 2017 in Massena.
The boy was in bed upstairs at his grandmother’s house when the fire broke out.
Police said the boy’s door was locked from the outside.
The grandmother, Shari Caza, pleaded guilty in July to criminally negligent homicide.
She will be sentenced next month.
Michael Riley’s sentence will be left up to the judge.
