WATERTOWN, N.Y. (WWNY) - New numbers from the military give a disturbing picture about suicide in the service. And the bottom line is - military suicides reached their highest recorded level in 2018.
Military.com says that while suicide remains rare, the number of service members killing themselves in 2018 was the highest number since the defense department began collecting suicide data in 2001. The 2018 numbers exceed a record set in 2012.
These numbers are from the Department of Defense.
325 active duty service members took their own lives in 2018.
The army, the largest branch of the service, reported the most suicides at 139.
Defense Department officials have called the numbers devastating and unacceptable.
