WADDINGTON, N.Y. (WWNY) - This weekend, it’s a party in Waddington - a big one.
As the 2019 Berkley Bassmaster Elite fishing tournament entered its third day Saturday, you could see why the Waddington stop on the Elite series is highly regarded.
“We’ve been averaging over 30,000 people the past several years, over the four days," said Eric Lopez, B.A.S.S. Director of Events Operations.
Mike Kenny is selling maple syrup at the Outdoors Expo at Whitaker Park, run in conjunction with the tournament since it started in 2013.
He says the event has allowed him to connect with new people.
“Now we’ve reached out to Texas, Louisiana, Florida, Georgia, Virginia, where all these fishermen are from," Kenny said.
And last year, Kenny invited a friend.
“I thought I’d give it a try," said Don Moser, a partner at Mosner Maple.
"Much like any vendor spot, you’re always hesitant in the first year to see find out how you do. I thought that we did good enough that we’d be able to return this year.”
The event will be returning for the next few years, thanks to a four year contract with Bassmaster. Waddington Mayor Janet Otto-Cassada said the deal was a no-brainer.
“They asked and we said yes. It was that simple really," she said.
