POTSDAM, N.Y. (WWNY) - The Potsdam High School football team is looking for improvement this coming Section 10 season and is returning with a strong nucleus of players.
Coach Jim Kirka's squad went 2-4 in divisional play and 0-1 in class play.
They beat Malone 2-0 on a safety in the Section 10 Class B championship game, but lost in the first round of states by a final score of 15-0.
The Sandstoners are looking to not only win another sectional title in 2019 but to make a deeper run in state playoffs this season.
“I mean, the kids, they have goals every year, Kirka said, and that’s obviously one of our goals again this year, to win the sectional championship and ultimately take it a little bit further this year.”
Kirka's confidence stems from a veteran group of players returning on both sides of the ball and in key skill positions.
"We've got a lot of kids coming back," Kirka said. I mean, this is going to be our biggest senior class we've had in several years -- we've got a mixed bag, we've got some nice linemen, good skill players and they've been around. We've got experience, so really we've just got to perform this year."
The Sandstoners offense will run through quarterback Zach Kirka, who feels the Sandstoners can make the leap from sectionals to states with a number of weapons on both sides of the ball.
"We've got alot of returning guys, people I've been playing with since I've started playing varsity," Zach Kirka said, "so we all know where we all connect and we've just had that connection.
Potsdam opens the season on Friday, September 6 as the Sandstoners host St. Lawrence Central.
