Friday Sports: Watertown Girls’ Soccer blanks Canton

WATERTOWN, N.Y. (WWNY) - There was plenty on the local schedule Friday, including the Watertown Girls' Soccer Tournament. The Lady Cyclones hosted Canton in one of the games.

It was Abby Dent in goal for Canton with a save off of a direct kick. At the other end, Alanna Maston came out a the coverup for the Lady Cyclones.

It was Maston again, making a save and then grabbing the loose ball.

Later in the first half, Tatum Overton scored on a penalty kick, giving Watertown a 1-0 lead.

McKenna Lalonde then expanded the Watertown lead to 2-0. That's the way it ends, final Watertown 2, Canton 0.

The Lowville Red Raiders football team came up one win short of reaching the Section 3 Class C final at the Carrier Dome in 2018. But what will 2019 bring?

Coach Josh Coffman's Red Raiders posted a 7 and 2 overall record in 2018, and 5 and 1 in the Section 3 Class C North Division. They lost to eventual champion Holland Patent 49 to 28 in the Class C Semifinals.

Lowville is hoping to take that next step this season and bring home a Sectional Championship that eluded them last season.

"I thought that we, at the end of the season, I felt like we could have been playing a little bit better," said Coach Josh Coffman, "Maybe we didn't necessarily improve as the season went on like I thought we could and that's kinda on me. So I've got some work to do to make sure we're peaking at the end of the year this year."

The Red Raiders return a number of veterans at key positions, led by senior quarterback Chad Bach. With a strong group at the skill positions, Coffman is looking for big things from the Red Raiders in the upcoming season.

"I'm happy with what we have coming back. We did lose some good seniors. They will be tough to replace. I'm optimistic about where will be at the end of the season," said Coffman.

"We have a lot of skill positions coming back such as like wide receivers, running backs, that stuff. Our lines been in the weight room alot. They're just getting bigger, stronger, quicker," said quarterback Chad Bach, "A pretty strong team coming back, we lost only a few seniors and the spots we lost we're filling in with great, great talent."

The Red Raiders open their season at home on September 6th as they host Jordan Elbridge.

Lowville will be a part of our special look at north country high school football teams. The special is entitled “Autumn on the Line: the 7 News High School Football Preview”. It will be on Wednesday, September 4th, at 7 PM on Fox 28 and then repeated on Saturday, September 7th at 1 PM on 7 News.
