WATERTOWN, N.Y. (WWNY) - Caring for children isn't always easy when your partner is deployed, so the Watertown YMCA is helping out.

A program called "Respite Care" allows military families that have a member deployed to drop their children off for free.

Another program, "The Children's Waiting Room," provides free childcare for military families while the adults have medical appointments.

Organizers say these programs give military families the chance to get things done or just catch a break for a few hours.

"So many service members move here and they don't have families, they might be new to the area, so they don't have a trusted network that they can rely on for their childcare, but they always know that they can trust the Y and we are always here with open arms," said Shannon Walter, YMCA director of Project Strong Communities.

Those services are currently available to military families at the Downtown YMCA, the Fairgrounds YMCA and organizers say they’re looking into opportunities for the Carthage YMCA as well.
