GOUVERNEUR, N.Y. (WWNY) - The Gouverneur football team has unfinished business as it heads into a new season.
The Wildcats have set their sights on a Section 10 title.
The Wildcats ran the table in Section 10 last season, going undefeated in the regular season, but losing to OFA in the Section 10 Class C championship.
They finished the year 8-1.
After losing a number of key players from last year’s team, head coach Sean Devlin knows it will be a challenge to repeat that feat. With numbers down this season, the Wildcats will be relying on a group of young players to keep them at the top of the Section 10 standings.
“We have a few young guys coming back, we are really going to rely on our young guys this year to kind of carry us,” Devlin said. “Our numbers are down a little bit, we don’t have the size of the linemen that we’ve had n the past -- we are pretty sure we have some speed coming back in the backfield and especially on defense.”
"We lost a lot of guys, but we have a lot of guys to fill those spots in," player Caleb Farr said, "and I think they are going to do just as good."
"You know, I feel that we going to come back strong this season," Cayden Stowell said, "even though we lost, like, Logan and a couple other good linebackers and linemen."
The Wildcats open their 2019 season by hosting the Watertown Cyclones, something Devlin said he's excited about.
“We are glad to have Watertown -- we play them week one in Gouverneur,” he said. “It’s going to be exciting, it’s something different to prepare for, something different to look at -- they will be very good, obviously, and they are a big school and we are looking forward to playing them in week one.”
