FORT DRUM, N.Y. (WWNY) - Thursday night was the first NFL game of the season and soldiers on Fort Drum celebrated the kickoff with a Friday morning fun run.
Roughly 300 troops showed up for the BOSS Blitz 5K run/walk at the Magrath Sports Complex.
Many dressed in their favorite sports team's apparel for the 3.2-mile run. Organizers say these kind of events help make physical training a little more fun.
1st Lt. William Woodbery says being able to change up their workout outfits helps build comradery.
"Every day we wear the uniform, the uniform is great, it's one team, one fight, but to express yourself a little bit, to josh each other about it, it's like you're playing for this team, I'm playing for this team," Woodbery said.
“Again, it builds that comradery and that esprit de corps of learning more about one another and being able to bond with each other over a common interest,” he said, “so I think it’s great, it’s a lot of fun, you get to express yourself a little bit, people bring their dogs out, etcetera -- it’s great.”
Many soldiers ran together in groups while others like Woodbery pushed themselves.
He finished first, crossing the finish line at 18 minutes and 45 seconds.
