Friday Sports: First “Football Friday” as high school sports start

CLAYTON, N.Y. (WWNY) - It’s the first football Friday night of the school year with plenty of gridiron action around the north country.

First, we focus in on Thousand Islands, as the Vikings entertained Onondaga in Section 3 Class D play. A game with strong defense, Onondaga stout at the line of scrimmage and with the stop.

The Vikings flexed their muscle as Chris Wetterhahn took down the quarterback and gets across the line of scrimmage. More Thousand Islands defense as Emmett Baker dragged down the ball carrier for a short gain.

Colby Stewart blew up an Onondaga play as he recorded a loss for the runningback with a nice tackle.

Onondaga was going for it on 4th down in the second quarter but the Vikings stopped the drive.

There is some offensive play, a nice completion from Connor McKay to Brayden Mason for the nine yard gain. Thousand Islands once again stopping another Onondaga drive. The game was scoreless game at the half but Onondaga went on the beat Thousand Islands 6-0.

Besides the Thousand Islands game, there were plenty of other football contests involving local teams.

In Section 3 Class B football, South Jeff traveled to Bishop Ludden.
In the 2nd quarter, Marcus Kinsey hit Jarin Beauford for the 20 yard touchdown. Score: 22-6 South Jeff. In the next Spartans’ possession, Caleb Petrie found paydirt. The Spartans go on to beat Bishop Ludden 40-13.

In Section 3 Class C football from Lowville, the Red Raiders hosted Jordan Elbridge. The Red Raiders got on the board first as Alexander Pond looses his handle on the snap on the punt attempt and goes out of the endzone for a safety. Score: 2-0 Lowville.

On their next possession, Isaac Lyndaker took in from 12 yards out The 2 point conversion was good. Score: 10-0 Lowville.

With the score 16-0 Red Raiders, quarterback Chad Bach calls his own number and goes in from 14 yards out. Score: 24-0 Red Raiders. Lowville rolls to a 50-8 win.

In Section 3 Class B football, South Jeff traveled to Bishop Ludden.

In Section 3 Class D football, Beaver River was at Waterville. In the 4th quarter, the Beavers were up 13 when Noah Zehr picks off the pass from Conner Marriott.

Marriott hit Zach LaFrance to cut the Beavers lead to 7, but Beaver River beats Waterville 13-6.

In Section 3 Class D football from Sandy Creek, the Comets met Frankfort Schuyler. In the 1st quarter, Comets quarterback Ethan Hollister dropped back to pass but the ball was stripped and recovered by Tyler Rosati.

In the 2nd quarter, score: 7-0 Frankfort Schuyler. Rosati takes it in from 6 yards out, 13-0 Frankfort Schuyler. Frankfort Schuyler beats Sandy Creek 26-6.

In Section 10 football from O.F.A., the Blue Devils hosted Massena. Tristan lovely took the handoff and went in for the touchdown. Score: 6-0 Blue Devils. The Raiders got on the scoreboard on Dominic Montacelli's quarterback sneak. The Blue Devils beat Massena 29-6.

In Section 10 football, St. Lawrence Central was at Potsdam. The Sandstoners' Will Varney came up with the St. Lawrence Central fumble. Five plays later, Varney found paydirt from 12 yards out, putting Potsdam on top 24-0. Potsdam goes on to blank St. Lawrence Central 36-0.
