Sunday: Revolutionary War & other veterans honored in Ellisburg

ELLISBURG, N.Y. (WWNY) - The Ellisburg Cemetery is the final resting place for dozens of patriots. Sunday, those veterans were honored with a special sign and a ceremony.

The sign commemorates the dozen Revolutionary War veterans buried there - the sign references 11, but research has shown a 12th soldier is buried in Ellisburg Cemetery.

The Ellisburg Cemetery Association dedicated the sign Sunday, and celebrated all those who served who are buried in the cemetery.

“We not only have 12 confirmed American Revolution patriots, we also have 38 confirmed War of 1812 patriots buried here and 70 Civil War patriots buried here, plus all of the other wars included,” said Mary Lee Bettinger, President of the Ellisburg Cemetery Association.

“It’s just very very important to me and the other trustees here at the cemetery.”

The sign was created by the William G. Pomeroy Foundation with the Sons of the American Revolution Memorial Sign Program.
