TOWN OF CHAMPION, N.Y. (WWNY) - Three acres of farmland burned late Tuesday afternoon near West Carthage.
The landowner, Stan Buzzell, tells 7 News he believed that he went through the right channels to have an “open burn."
Buzzell says a New York state trooper became concerned and called the fire department when he saw the smoke.
“At about 3:30 p.m., we were dispatched for a grass fire. Upon arrival, we found a couple acres burning. It was a farmer that had a controlled burn. Due to the size of it and the nature of the call, we had to extinguish and get it back under control for him,” said Peter Crump, West Carthage fire chief.
The West Carthage Fire Department had help from half a dozen neighboring fire departments.
