CANTON, N.Y. (WWNY) - Canton’s fire department is celebrating 150 years of service.
The trucks, the gear and the firefighters have changed. But the mission of the Canton Fire Department is the same: serving the public.
They'll be celebrating 150 years of carrying out that mission this Saturday.
There will be a Main Street parade, a fire station open house, and fireworks at dusk.
People can learn about an institution steeped in tradition and one that has been all-volunteer since its founding in 1869.
“ Municipalities like Canton can't afford a full-time paid department. So they rely on volunteers," said Robert Crowe, Canton fire chief.
There will also be a multimedia presentation of the department’s history on Saturday.
